What Is It?: This is a thyroid replacement hormone and is used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid.)  The commercial product is available in a tablet form (called Cytomel) and provides prompt relief. Your prescription is compounded into a special powdered base that is designed to slow the release of the drug after you swallow the capsule.

How To Use: Slow Release T3 is commonly taken twice daily – every 12 hours, usually with food or milk. It may take a few weeks to recognize the full action of T3. However, some people react more quickly. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your pharmacist or doctor to explain any part you do not understand. Do not take more or less without checking with your doctor.

Possible Side Effects: Weight loss, tremor, headache, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, nervousness, irritability, insomnia, excessive sweating, increased appetite, changes in menstrual cycle, sensitivity to heat.

Warning:  If you experience chest pain or rapid, irregular heartbeat or pulse, contact your doctor immediately.

Storage: Keep in the original container out of the reach of children. Avoid excessive heat and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Do not keep past the expiration date listed on the label.

Note: If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
