What Is It?: Allopurinol is used to treat gout and to keep the body from producing too much uric acid.  Allopurinol is used to prevent gout attacks, not treat them once they occur.  It may be used by humans and animals.

How To Use: Allopurinol is usually taken once daily by mouth as a tablet, capsule or oral liquid.  Follow the instruction on your prescription label.

Possible Side Effects: Side effects are not common. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or don’t seem to go away; upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, or drowsiness.  If you experience any of the following call your doctor immediately; skin rash, painful urination, blood in the urine, irritation of the eyes, or swelling of the lips or mouth.

Storage: Keep in the original container.  Keep out of the reach of children and pets.  Capsules and tablets may be stored at room temperature.  Some liquids should be stored in the refrigerator (see the prescription label.)  Store all medicines away from excess heat and moisture.  Do NOT store in the bathroom.

Note: If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
